COLUMBUS, Ohio — Six cows are dead after a trailer hauling 30 of them tipped over on the highway in west Columbus on Tuesday night.

The ramp from Interstate 70 to I-270 northbound was closed for more than eight hours following a crash that happened just before 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

One cow was dead when crews arrived on the scene. Five others were euthanized due to their injuries, according to a spokesperson with The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Personnel from Ohio State's Waterman Facility and the Don Scott Facility brought additional trucks, trailers and gates that helped haul the remaining cows away from the scene.

One cow managed to escape after the crash but was later lassoed by police and deputies from Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, police said.

No additional injuries were reported.

COWBOY UP. A trailer hauling cattle crashed on 70 at 270 Tuesday evening and one cow saw his chance to make a run for it. Great job to deputies and @ColumbusPolice for lassoing the escapee and keeping him off the highway before the animal caused a serious injury crash. pic.twitter.com/VDDw2RcMLq
